A Material Safety Data document and/or Transport Emergency Card always accompanies the shipment of furfural. Furfural is classified as a toxic chemical. Furfural will stain the skin yellow-brown if in contact with skin for any considerable time.
As a result, those working with furfural should always use rubber or neoprene gloves.
While furfural may be irritating to the eyes and nose, due to its relatively high boiling point (161.7°C, 323°F), it is difficult to build up substantial concentrations of furfural in the atmosphere. Flammability of Furfural is comparable to that of kerosene or No.1 fuel oil, and if ignited the fire can be controlled by the use of water, foam, carbon dioxide or dry chemicals.
Furfural should not be mixed with strong acids or alkalies nor stored near strong oxidizing chemicals. For detailed information on health and safety please refer to the Material Safety Data Sheet.
